"Customer service?"

I moved from the village 10 years ago but visit often. I went down to cross street stores this afternoon expecting to make a purchase. On entering the empty shop the door bell rang out to alert the staff someone had entered the shop I heard a duffle frontage back of the post office area so thought someone was about to attend me ...... But nothing for what felt like 3 minutes I then left the shop no purchase made and took my business to the thriving esso/spar shop

If small shops wish to survive is this the customer experience that will keep it open ? Next time I visit and I need a shop won't be using cross street stores.
